TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Abu Bakar Baasyir is reported to be released from his 15-year jail time verdict since June 12, 2011. President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) approved Abu Bakar Baasyir's release due to health and humanity reasons.
The terrorist convict had refused clemency from President and had passed two-third of his sentence period.
Jokowi's legal advisor Yusril Ihza Mahendra said the released is based on consideration of Baasyir’s health condition which continues to decline. ”President’s response is good and he agrees if Baasyir is released,” he said when visiting Gunung Sindur Correctional Institution in Bogor on Friday, January 18, 2019.
Yusril explained that the liberation efforts of Baasyir have been done before the presidential election campaign but it was obstructed by the regulatory and requirements issues.
Meanwhile, he viewed that Abu Bakar Baasyir has rights to be free after serving two-third period of his jail time. Besides, his 81 years old age and his declining health become the considerations.
“President Jokowi has emphasized that this time, Abu Bakar Baasyir's release should be done and without terms. It is [based on] humanity consideration,” said Yusril.
